Spotlight - My Chinese teaching experience in the Czech Republic
Brief introduction to the author: Wu Chengqian is a student who enrolled in 2010 majoring in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language at the School of Foreign Languages, SWJTU; winner of the National Scholarship in 2011 and qualified for admission with exam waiver for postgraduate study in Peking University.
In September 2012, I was selected by the Department to travel to Palacky University in the Czech Republic, and the Confucius Institute at Palacky University, to serve as a Chinese language intern for one semester. This was a journey which bore much fruit.
The Univerzita Palackeho v Olomouc is one of the oldest universities in the Czech Republic which is located in the fifth biggest city, Olomouc, and is the only cooperative university that has an established Confucius Institute. The Chinese courses are designed and provided by the Department of Asian Languages and Research in the Philosophy School, and include courses for undergraduates, postgraduates and PhD students. Currently, there are about 200 students.
I taught a comprehensive Chinese course for freshmen and an oral class for sophomores. I have learned a lot and managed to accumulate some good teaching experience from my practice.
As for the comprehensive course, my aim was to arouse students’ learning interests and help them develop a sense of accomplishment. At the very early stages of learning Chinese, students are more likely to give up because of difficulties in pronunciation and handwriting. I therefore tried to introduce some cultural activities into my classes to help stimulate their enthusiasm in learning Chinese. In the mean time, I made students practice the same conversation at different learning stages in order to help them realize that they have made some progress. Additionally, my writing on the blackboard was arranged in a straightforward way that enabled students to gain a better understanding, and I also created a special area to help students accumulate new words. With the one-to-one oral class, I adopted different teaching methods according to students’ abilities and levels. I did encounter some difficulties, because the Chinese level of the students was varied. However, I was successful at recording every student’s mistakes and helping them consciously correct these errors in the following lessons.
Besides teaching Chinese, I also participated in my professional practice and daily agenda at the Confucius Institute, where I designed and organized different cultural activities. During my internship, I successively planned and hosted a Spring Festival Show, calligraphy and Tai Chi courses in the Chinese culture month, and organized the invigilation of the SHK etc. I paid great attention to ensuring the spread of Chinese culture during all these activities. For example, I introduced ancient Chinese philosophy to the Czechs in the Tai Chi course, and made the chirography, and changes in calligraphy, my key teaching points in the calligraphy course.
After my three-month overseas teaching practice, I learnt that the accumulation of traditional culture, and the learning of the ancient arts, are of equal importance to the basic knowledge and teaching techniques of a teacher lecturing Chinese as a foreign language. What’s more, the promotion of Chinese culture is in fact our ultimate goal.
